Associated with the McCoy surname is the saying, “The Real McCoy”. It means the real thing, genuine. Other forms of it are: 'real mackay', 'real macoy' and 'real mackoy'.
In Scotland, "The real MacKay", was first recorded in 1856. It may have come from "A drappie o' the real McKay." (whiskey). This was a slogan to promote G. Mackay & Co Ltd's whisky.
